Shah Rukh Khan's Happy New Year Makes Rs 300 Crores Worldwide

SHAH RUKH KHAN'S VENTURE HAPPY NEW YEAR HAS CROSSED RS 300-CRORE MARK AT THE BOX OFFICE WORLDWIDE

There's a reason why Shah Rukh Khan is Bollywood's badshah. His latest venture Happy New Year has crossed Rs 300-crore mark at the box office worldwide.

"The movie has crossed more than Rs 310 worldwide gross," a source from Shah Rukh's Red Chillies Entertainments, confirmed to IANS.

Happy New Year, directed by Farah Khan, also features actors Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood, Vivaan Shah and Jackie Shroff. A heist drama, with dollops of dance and music, it opened to a bumper weekend, making it the quickest film to mint Rs 100 crore when it released on October 24, said a statement.

The movie is being lapped up by audiences of all age groups despite mixed reviews. According to exhibitors, Happy New Year will continue to pull in audiences to theatres for at least 10 more days.

The new serial kissers of Bollywood

Sushant Singh Rajput seems to be the new actor to join the serial kisser bandwagon. According to a report in DNA, Sushant and co-star Swastika Mukherjee have shot the longest kissing scene for their upcoming film Detective Byomkesh Bakshy. The report quoted director Dibakar Banerjee stating that he wanted to throw Sushant Singh off guard and hence he had not briefed the actor about his intentions of shooting a lengthy kissing scene. 

The report further stated that Sushant was displeased at the end of it, but when he saw the final shot, he seemed fine with it. Previously he had kissing scenes in Shuddh Desi Romance and is all set to share a hot lip-lock with Anushka Sharma in PK. The actor seems uninhibited when it comes to locking lips on the silver screen. While Sushant may give Emraan Hashmi a run for his money, read on to know about the other competitors in the industry. 

Siddharth Malhotra, who entered Bollywood with the film Student Of The Year, kissed Alia Bhatt in the movie. In his next film Hasee Toh Phasee, the actor was again seen in a hot lip-lock with Parineeti Chopra. 

He also kissed Shraddha Kapoor in his next, Ek Villain! 

Arjun Kapoor too is on his way to be the next serial kisser. The actor has emerged as an expert in love-making scenes. In his debut film Ishaqzaade, he was seen kissing Parineeti and in his next film Aurangzeb the actor was seen doing intimate acts with Sashaa Agha. Arjun Kapoor and Alia Bhatt set the temperatures soaring as they kissed onscreen in 2 States. 

While talking about his intimate moments, Arjun said in an interview to TOI, "It's the most natural thing to do. When a man falls in love, the first thing he will do is to kiss the girl. I think Emraan has broken the myth. Also, the audience today is sensible and understands the context of a scene. The love-making scene was integral to Ishaqzaade and Aurangzeb and was done aesthetically. We did not do it to add sleaze." 

Ranveer Singh too is the new entrant in the gang of kissers. The actor was confident with his chemistry in his debut film Band Baaja Baarat with Anushka Sharma and was seen getting involved in a hot lip-lock. Further, he was seen kissing Deepika Padukone in Ram Leela. He was also snapped planting a kiss on Deepika's cheek at the Hello! Awards.

Ranbir Kapoor, who did a kissing scene with his ex-flame Deepika Padukone in Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani is confident about his scenes. He even had a a kissing scene with Southern hottie Ileana D'Cruz in Barfi! In an interview with the Times Of India, Ranbir said, "Kissing onscreen is extremely technical! 

You have to see if the light is coming right, if your face is in the right position for the camera. Besides there are so many people around! I am an actor and it's a part of my acting. I also don't usually need retakes. I am a good kisser."

King Khan revels in stardom

The 48-year-old is happy that the audience liked the Farah Khan directorial, which minted a record INR 45 million on its opening day. 

Since the 1990s, Shahrukh Khan’s movies have been creating fireworks at the box office during the Diwali festival. Remaining true to tradition, the superstar’s latest Happy New Year (HNY) continued the trend by turning out to be a money-spinner.

King Khan’s HNY released a day after the festival of lights and he says superstition has got nothing to do with it. “It is good to release films on a holiday,” he adds. “You get that extra benefit of a day off… I am lucky. The movies (that released during Diwali) have done well, but I am not superstitious like that. Any day is good if I get a good holiday,” said Khan whose movies like Baazigar (1993), Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Dil To Pagal Hai (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998) and Om Shanti Om (2007) all released on Diwali were runaway hits.

Riding high on the success of Happy New Year, the 48-year-old is happy that the audience liked the Farah Khan directorial, which minted a record INR 45 million on the opening day of its release. “I was expecting a lot of people to watch the film as it was a holiday. And the number is indicative of the fact that so many people came to see the film,” said Shahrukh.

“If they came and didn’t like it, it would’ve been sad. I’ve gotten to understand that 70 to 80 per cent of the audience liked it as a family film,” said Shahrukh, whose company Red Chillies Entertainment Pvt. Ltd. produced the film. While some critics have given positive reviews, quite a few panned it, Shahrukh is unperturbed by the critics’ mixed response to the film because his aim is to entertain masses, not just classes, he says. “I respect their views but I don’t make films for such a niche audience of five to seven people. I try to make films for larger spectrum of people,” he said.

The film’s success also spells fortune for its ensemble cast  — Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Jackie Shroff, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah. Despite the success of Happy New Year, work for the star, doesn’t stop as he will be tied up with Fan and Raees in the coming months.

While masala entertainers mostly click with the audience, asked if he would like to feature in any Hollywood adaptation, he said: “I’d rather do a film that is more original but if somebody comes up to me with a story and says it’s an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet and if I like the film, I would do it.”

He also shared that he likes Hollywood films like Bad Boys and Men In Black.

'Happy New Year' creates history, makes Rs 45 crore on first day!

New Delhi: One of the most awaited films of this year—'Happy New Year' released a day after Diwali, and received a thundering audience response the very first day. According to a renowned trade analyst, the film has raked in Rs 45 crore on the opening day, a record for any Hindi film so far.

According to the data generated by the trade pundit—'Happy New Year' has made Rs 44.97 crore on the opening day, which means in Hindi—Rs 42.62 crore, Telugu Rs 1.43 crore and Tamil Rs 92 lacs.

'Happy New Year' has been directed by Farah Khan, and has Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah in pivotal roles. The film is a heist comedy-drama, majorly shot in Dubai.

Happy New Year review: This SRK starrer is like Ocean’s 11 re-written by baboons

Masala entertainment movie making lesson number 1: if you cast Shah Rukh Khan in your movie, it will eventually make money, no matter how stupid, tiresome and humorless it is. Case number 157: Happy New Year, aka the new Farah Khan Vanity Project for the lowest of the lowest common denominator audience.

There are hundreds of ways in which a movie could disinterest you, although few films come as close to scaling the peak of boredom as Happy New Year does. This is a film that exists for no other reason but to parade the astonishing star power of its hero to the aam janta. Intelligence and quality don’t matter. Sure, there have been worse desi films this year, but none have treated its audience in such a casually dismissive fashion. The movie looks and feels like a home video project that was intended for appreciation by precisely two people in the entire universe - Farah and Shah Rukh Khan.

I was about an hour into Happy New Year before I started wondering what the heck it was about. It seemed to be about Charlie (SRK) planning a heist against a magnate (Jackie Shroff) with his friends to avenge his dead dad. But then, for some reason, they participate in a dance competition that’s supposed to be a front for the heist. This ridiculous contrivance could only be present because Farah Khan wanted some closure on her career before she became a filmmaker.

Diamonds, a safe, an underground tunnel, a hacker, a getaway plan – it sounds like the right ingredients, but all of it is so incredibly idiotic and illogical that Happy New Year feels like Ocean’s 11 re-written by baboons. There are a couple of fascinating things: Anupam Kher, who plays Charlie’s father is credited not as a special appearance, but as an “Emotional Appearance”. Charlie is named Charlie only because he can call his henchmen ‘Angels’. Even the iconic water fountain shot in Oceans 11 is reused here, probably to rub it in our faces.

That’s pretty much it. Set aside the astonishingly stupid plot, and all we're left with is an unending series of self-referential jokes on SRK’s earlier movies. When Charlie is about to lose a boxing match he says, “Badi badi matches mein choti choti cheez hoti rehti hai.” When Charlie has to instill confidence into someone, he says, “Main hoon na.” It’s so blatant and lazy it feels like you’re listening to a microphone planted under the bar stool of one of the stars on an off night.

There are other people in the cast, but this movie is only about SRK. The others don’t even get a chance to get a word in edgeways. One feels for Abhishek Bachchan, who’s given two roles and yet less screen time than Sonu Sood and his chest. Speaking of which, the male torso is displayed to a fetishist level here, beginning from SRK’s unintentionally hilarious intro: the man rises from the ground topless, dripping with wet mud. A hose pipe fires water on his body in slow-mo, and we zoom in on his left nipple, zoom out and zoom in on the right, then zoom out again. Kind of like in Batman and Robin.

How Farah Khan, who gave us hints of good satire in Om Shanti Om got sucked down into this vortex of ineptitude is anyone's guess, but Happy New Year is uncommonly stupid and tacky enough to make Sallu’s heist film Kick look as complex as Memento. Deepika Padukone once again has a weird accent, but is the least unlikable aspect of the movie, even though her character is an affront to depiction of women in cinema.

There are only a few things worse than Happy New Year, like

A) Vivaan Shah wasting his skills on fluff like this,

B) An Anurag Kashyap-Vishal Dadlani sex tape.

The latter actually exists in the movie. Kashyap also later appears in the film applauding the heroic heroes in the movie – it’s an unsubtle attempt by Farah Khan to proclaim once and for all that commercial cinema will always enslave indie. My reaction to this echoes Bachchan’s character quirk in the movie – violent, non-stop vomiting.

Movie review: Happy New Year a below average film

Farah Khan's masala flick Happy New Year has everything going well businesswise but it's extremely low on content. It's grand, beautiful, shot in exotic locations across Dubai, has all the SRK moves which fans love, a hit Jodi (Shah Rukh Khan - Deepika Padukone), it's visually appealing but there is nothing else apart from that!

Happy New Year is a heist thriller with a lot of naach gaana. Charlie (Shah Rukh Khan) wants to take revenge from Charan Grover (Jackie Shroff) because he betrayed Charlie's father (Anupam Kher), which landed him in jail and led to his death.

Grover runs a safety lockers' business and now that he will be shielding an expensive diamond at the Atlantis Hotel in Dubai, Charlie will steal it. Coincidently the day the diamond is going to arrive there is a dance competition at the same hotel. Charlie forms a group of people who are good enough to steal but not good dancers. The team (Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani and Vivaan Shah) now will take the help of a bar dancer Mohini (Deepika Padukone) to learn dancing and will eventually make their way to the vault.

The film is predictable and yes sometimes that's fine. You know the hero will make his way to the locker eventually but the journey to that locker should be gripping and entertaining and sadly this one is full of cliches. There are very few portions which are actually funny. Most of it is just illogical drama making no sense. It's not that I walked into the cinema to watch Happy New Year and find logic but in the film things don't fall into place and there are petty jokes. For instance, the Korean Dance Team is called Chicken Chilly and some dance moves make fun of Boman Irani while he gets recurring fits, now that's just bizarre!

Shah Rukh Khan has worked hard on his body for this film and he does a fine job of flaunting it. Extremely full of energy most of the times, he entertains. Deepika puts in sincere efforts but is limited because of the writing. Boman Irani plays a Parsi and is the funniest of the lot. Sonu Sood is brilliant. Abhishek Bachchan performs well too and so does Vivaan Shah.

Vishal Shekhar's music is good for the film, some songs set the mood since dance performances are a part of the plot.

Visually Happy New Year looks great but why wouldn't a film with a big banner, a talented filmmaker like Farah Khan, a good cast and great locations? That's never the challenge. The challenge is to entertain and Happy New Year falls short in entertaining, it's long length of over three hours being the weakest point.

There is no doubt that Farah Khan knows the craft well but she is yet to give an entertainer like Om Shanti Om.

If you go and watch Happy New Year, you will surely sit through it but will you walk out smiling? I can't take that guarantee.

What Made Deepika Padukone Cry

TOO MUCH HAPPINESS SEEMS TO HAVE MADE ACTRESS DEEPIKA PADUKONE TEARY-EYED

Too much happiness seems to have made actress Deepika Padukone teary-eyed. Team Happy New Year had some emotional confessions to make when they visited the NDTV studio on October 21.

Actors Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Vivaan Shah and the film's director Farah Khan have been shooting for the film for almost 200 days followed by a series of concerts to promote the film. All this has created a strong bond among the team.

Boman, who got nostalgic at the show said, "We've been breaking-up, getting teary eyed now and then. People have been hiding behind little corners doing their little sniffles. And I feel it's a beautiful thing to feel like that for someone whom you may not be able to see for some time."

Deepika, by this time, was in tears, even as Farah asked shakily, "Why are you making us cry, Boman?" Boman continued, "This is the purity of staying together for more than 200 days and not wanting to let go."

He said, "Today we were watching Main Hoon Na in Shah Rukh's room, and we were recalling every moment of the film. I can tell you 25 years from now, we will be sitting in some hotel room, in some corner of the world, watching Happy New Year and feel the same."

This emotional anecdote brought forth more tears from Deepika. Both Deepika and Farah looked emotional, trying to fight back their tears. Shah Rukh later called Deepika and Farah "lovable emotional fools" 

On a Happy-er note, Deepika shared some bizarre secrets of her co-stars. She revealed, after much persuasion and coaxing, that Shah Rukh Khan feels awkward showing his feet. She said, "Shah Rukh has an issue with showing his feet to people. So he'll never take his shoes off and you'll never see him bare feet." "Or even in sandals," Farah chipped in.

SRK declined to explain, just saying that he feels awkward to which Farah humorously added, "Just the eight-pack abs he'll show, no feet."

Deepika also revealed that Boman is obsessed with good breath as he keeps on asking her for mouth-freshener and mints. Farah added that the her Shirin Aur Farhad Ki Nikal Padi co-star was obsessed with his looks and asks at least 10 times a day, "Am I looking good?"

In Vivaan's case, Deepika said that the son of veteran actor Naseeruddin Shah, has a peculiar style of dance. Vivaan, without wasting a minute, demonstrated his dance 'skills' to the tune of the film's song Lovely, and was soon joined by Shah Rukh, Deepika and Boman.

Deepika also revealed a not so dirty secret about herself, saying she is obsessed with cleanliness. The actress says she has borderline OCD and need to have everything perfect and clean, to which Farah said, "I have a dustbin in my car" and Shah Rukh explained, "Even the distance between the diya has to be uniform."

Happy New Year is slated to release a day after Diwali on October 24.

Happy New Year cast comes to Dubai

The cast of the much-awaited Diwali blockbuster Happy New Year -- Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Sonu Sood, Boman Irani, Vivaan Shah and director Farah Khan -- walked into the Silk Ballroom at the Atlantis, The Palm Dubai, yesterday to talk up the movie ahead of the grand exclusive invite-only premiere at the same venue. But for the gathered media and sponsors it was a sombre sight as the team displayed little or none of the camaraderie that was so evident in the months leading up to the film’s release.

They appeared disconnected from each other, and though the normally genial Shah Rukh Khan turned out to be his trademark eloquent self while answering questions, he did not smile often and seemed preoccupied. A major portion of the heist comedy was shot in Dubai, with Atlantis the Palm figuring prominently in the proceedings.

Farah said: “Dubai is one of my most favourite cities, especially since we’re so emotionally connected to it, having shot Happy New Year over here. When we wrote the script there were six characters and the seventh character was definitely Dubai… and Atlantis the Palm. The film wouldn’t have been possible if we hadn’t been allowed to use this iconic place in the climax.”

Shah Rukh was also all praise for the city. “It’s not even a second home, it’s home. Dubai presents itself in the most beautiful way. It’s the new hub of the world. I feel a lot of love here. I’m so glad that Farah made this film.”

Deepika evidently enjoyed being the only girl in the ensemble cast. “Look at these men. I don’t think I’ve ever felt so special. It’s an amazing group, so protective, so caring. I’m going to miss all the attention that was given to me. They have involved me in everything that they’ve done -- even a guy thing like playing videogames. This film has been one of my most special experiences.”

On what drives him, Shah Rukh said: “The only thing that drives all of us is to be able to present to people some kind of happiness, satisfaction, and entertainment. Every film that you make, you always feel you can do a better job, and that’s what drives me. I want to be able to make more people happy the next time.”

Abhishek said he preferred a multi-starrer to a solo role. “You have a group of like-minded actors who get along; no one is trying to outshine the other, everyone respects each other’s space. You work collectively towards making a great film. That is always going to be more fun.”

An obvious display of emotion from Boman Irani broke the ice a bit, which left us wondering if it was the prospect of parting from each other post the film release that had put a dampener on the mood of the team.

“This is for all of you. I will love you and miss you,” he said, adding that Happy New Year was “not a cinematic but a human experience”.

Charlie believes in seizing opportunities and becoming a winner from a loser. "Duniya mein do tarah ke log hote hain - winners and losers, lekin zindagi har loser ko ek mauka zaroor deti hai jisme woh winner ban sakta hai," he reminds us at the end of it all.

Deepika's cleavage controversy has sure brought our Bollywood divas in a defensive mode. They take care not to be in controversy unnecessarily. During her recent promotion of her upcoming film Bang Bang Katrina was seen wearing a short dress. She reportedly asked the lens men not to click her from a wrong angle. Aishwarya Rai Shah Rukh Kahn Reunion On The Horizon; Rohit Shetty Discusses Screenplay With `Devdas’ Stars

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the Bollywood Legend, may reunite with Shah Rukh Khan for the first time since they burned up the screen in "Devdas."

Absolute India reported that Shah Rukh Khan approached Aishwarya Rai Bachchan to play a role in the director Rohit Shetty's next project. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will star alongside Shah Rukh Khan. Based on their past pairing Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan promise to sizzle together in Rohit Shetty's next movie.

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will play the heroine in the new movie. According to rumors, Rohit met with Aishwarya to discuss the script. Aishwarya and Shah Rukh Khan haven't been paired together since Sanjay Leela Bhansali's blockbuster "Devdas." The news joins reports that  the new Shah Rukh Khan film will also star Kajol in Rohit Shetty's upcoming film.

In 2000, Shah Rukh and Aishwarya were featured together as siblings in the film "Josh." Aishwarya put in a cameo appearance in Shah Rukh Khan's film "Mohabbatein," which co-starred Amitabh Bachchan. Rai also appeared in Shah Rukh Khan' film "Shakti."

Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan were a Bollywood phenomenon after they played together in  Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 2002 magnum opus "Devdas." The have not been seen together onscreen since.

The new movie will be Shah Rukh and Rohit's second project. In 2013 Rohit starred in the superhit "Chennai Express," which starred Deepika Padukone.

After a sabbatical of four years, Aishwarya Rai will next be seen on the big screen in Sanjay Gupta's film "Jazbaa" which also stars Irrfan Khan.

Aishwarya Rai is internationally known as "most beautiful woman in the world." She is best known to American audiences for the films "The Last Legion" with Colin Firth, "Bride and Prejudice" and "Mistress of Spices." Her husband Abishek Bachan is a star on the rise. His latest film, "Dhoom 3" hit theaters this weekend and is on the way to becoming a box office smash.

Shweta Basu sex scandal: Deepika Padukone extends support

Finding fanny: Lost and found

How far will you go to find love? After a Bollywood “Cocktail”, Director Homi Adajania drinks neat and manages to capture the quirks of love and longing with lust playing hide and seek. On the surface it appears as nothing more than absurd humour highlighting the eccentricities of five Goans caught in a time warp. But as the wrap unravels, Homi delivers the bitter uncertainties of life in the form of a sweet pill without letting us know what he is up to. Like a seasoned magician he takes the carpet off our feet when you least expect it.

It is a kind of film which keeps a smile on your face but at the same time makes you feel guilty about how pride can ruin budding relationships. It shows us the shapes unrequited love can take. It is this twitchy feeing that makes this screwball comedy special. Not many films manage to make the heart twinge these days, when, like many things, emotions are also manufactured.

Set in Pocolim, a fictional Goan village where change is not the only constant in life, an aging postman Ferdie cries one night when he finds a letter that he posted more than four decades has returned to him. It is a letter where Ferdie had spelt out his emotions for Stephanie Fernandes (Anjali Patil). A young angelic widow Angie (Deepika Padukone) helps him to find Stephanie or Fanny by putting together a journey where they are joined in by Angie’s frenzied widowed mother in law Rosie (Dimple Kapadia). They need a car and a driver. So they lure Don Podro (Pankaj Kapur), a painter in love with Rosie’s voluptuous body and the brooding Savio (Arjun Kapoor), who was in love with Angie but was too proud to express it.

Rosie comes with her cat Nareus, who soon becomes a metaphor for what these travellers are hiding. As the masks come off, mirth and melancholy become intimate bedfellows, best captured in the scene where Angie gives Savio a polite dressing down after making love. Or the one where Don Podro discovers that his passion for Rosie is only skin deep.

One has learnt that the screenplay is drawn from a yet to be published novel by Homi’s long time collaborator Kersi Khambatta. Though it doesn’t guarantee but when you draw from a well soaked material, chances are that the characters don’t crumble easily. Also the dialogues don’t slip into contrivances. The film is made in English and there is not a single moment where you feel that these people are putting up a façade. There is a Hindi dub version playing in theatres as well. This critic watched both and found that not much has lost in translation. It is partly because Homi has retained crucial words and sentences in English and largely because he hasn’t relied only on words to express the quirks of the characters. A lot has been captured through expressions and he has got the cast to deliver the goods. Take the opening scene where Ferdie discovers that the letter never reached Fanny. Before Homi spill the details, Naseer conveys the pain of the unrequited love through his mien. Seasoned cinematographer Anil Mehta turns the languid pace of the place into a work of art and French composer Mathias Duplessy tunes and arrangements generate the Portuguese flavour even when the lines go the “Mahi vey”.

With “Cocktail”, Homi established that Deepika has more to her than just a pretty face. Angie is the opposite of Veronica but as we found an Angie in Veronica, here we discover a streak of Veronica in Angie. Playing an irresistible dame who will say sorry before slaying, Deepika takes off the fineries of Bollywood and you can sense the freedom from baggage in her performance. Arjun shows restraint with his scowls and for once sounds genuine in his anguish. Kapur doesn’t allow the flamboyant Don Podro to go over the top but it is Dimple who lends scars to this otherwise pretty-faced film as the lady whose fragile ego and frantic disposition often lead to funny results. Things get untangled rather easily towards the end making one feel that Homi hasn’t paid heed to don Podro’s advice – ‘In art there is no compromise.’ Still there are many reasons to get lost!

Foot-tapping number? Nah, IndiaWaale is no dance anthem either

The first song of Shah Rukh Khan's forthcoming film Happy New Year was released late on Tuesday night. Composed by Vishal-Shekhar and sung by Vishal Dadlani, KK, Shankar Mahadevan and Neeti Mohan, one expected IndiaWaale to be a foot-tapping number. 

The song, however, falls woefully short of expectations. More than a dance number, the song simply serves as an excuse to introduce the lead characters. Even its beats fail to do justice to the attitude they carry on screen. 

In fact, for almost one whole minute (out of the 2:16 seconds-long video) we don't see anything other than the actors walking across the camera frame or down the stairs! It is only in the last 30 seconds that the tempo really builds up into a decent dance number. 

IndiaWaale, features Deepika Padukone, Shah Rukh Khan, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah. Irshad Kamil has penned the lyrics of the song which the makers call 'A Dance Anthem'. 

Said director Farah Khan, "IndiaWaale is the first-of-its-kind song. A dance anthem for sure! It gives you goose bumps and also forces you to get up and dance. It was truly the most difficult song to crack as not only I but Vishal-Shekhar and Irshad Bhai (Kamil) had to think of today’s patriotism and make a song around that. Today what we feel for our country is so different from the sentiments of the '70s and '80s. It’s really a song that encapsulates all that makes us uniquely Indiawaale"

There are two version of the song in the film, and a glimpse of the same can be seen in the promo of the song.  "IndiaWaale is a song to be sung with a lot of pride. It has been an honour for us to get an opportunity to make a song on this situation. Our first ever!" said Vishal-Shekhar. 

Happy New Year is produced by Red Chillies Entertainments Pvt Ltd and distributed by Yash Raj Films worldwide. The movie is slated to hit theatres this Diwali in Hindi, Tamil and Telugu languages.

Singham returns to box office with roaring success

Ajay Devgn-starrer Singham Returns, which raked in Rs 32 crore on its opening day on August 15, upstaged Salman Khan’s Kick, which was the highest opening day grosser for 2014 at Rs 26 crore.

Rohit Shetty, who directed and co-produced the movie, now has two films with more than Rs 30 crore opening day collection — the second one being last year’s Eid release Chennai Express. Singham Returns joins Salman Khan’s 2012 Independence Day release Ek Tha Tiger, Hrithik Roshan’s Krissh 3 and Aamir Khan’s Dhoom 3 to be in the top five opening day collections by a Bollywood movie.

The film is a sequel to the 2011 film Singham, which starred Ajay Devgn in the titular role, and did very well at the box office raking in Rs 100 crore. Devgn returns as police officer Bajirao Singham in the sequel with Kareena Kapoor playing the female lead and a supporting cast that includes Amol Gupte, Anupam Kher, Dayanand Shetty and Mahesh Manjrekar.

Many factors worked in favour of Singham Returns, say analysts. While the franchise is popular with the masses, thanks to the success of Singham, releasing the movie on a public holiday (Independence Day) has also helped improve footfall. The movie was released in nearly 3,500 screens across India, 500 shy of the 4,000 screens that Kick was released in.

However, Singham Returns, with an average occupancy of 80 per cent on the opening day pan-India, has trumped Kick’s opening day collection. “While Kick missed out on a huge movie going to audience in UP, as it was released on the last Friday of the holy month of Ramzan. In the case of Singham Returns, there was no such barrier and single screens and multiplexes across the country showed healthy occupancy,” say trade pundits.

The movie is expected to continue doing well, as many schools, colleges and offices are closed on Monday on account of Dahi Handi. Singham Returns is a popular movie among the kids as well, which is further expected to drive collections. It should be able to cross the Rs 100-crore mark by Monday night, feel distributors.

Often referred to as the Rs 100-crore director, this could be Shetty’s fifth movie to cross the box office milestone. The other movies include Chennai Express, Singham, Bol Bachchan and Golmaal 3. Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone starrer Chennai Express, in fact, kicked off the festive season at the box office last year breaking records and chugging to the Rs 200-crore mark as well.

In the case of Singham Returns, the analysts are not sure if it will cross the 200-crore mark. After the long weekend, the movie will need to sustain collections through the week before it can take advantage of the weekend once again. The current trend in Bollywood is that the first weekend (in this case it is almost four- day long) is the most voluminous in terms of collections and the following weekdays can see a drop of as much as 70 per cent in terms of box office collections. Kick defied this trend earlier last month with steady collections throughout the first week. However, the second week saw a significant dip in revenue.

Singham Returns has been made with a budget of Rs 110-115 crore (including production, prints and advertising). The broadcast rights of the movie have been sold to STAR India under a deal between Devgn and the channel network. The deal, valued at approximately Rs 400 crore, is similar to the network’s agreement with Salman Khan, and gives it the telecast rights to all of Devgn’s movies released between 2013 and 2017. Devgn is also a co-producer on the film along with Reliance Entertainment.

The trailer that looks like another masterpiece on the lines of an 'Om Shanti Om' is mainly a con film where six losers embark on a mission called Happy New Year to loot the diamonds. But all they have to do is participate in a dance competition. 

The trailer gives a glimpse of the huge canvas on which the film is made. Mainly a musical extravaganza, the 'Indiawaale' theme has been well dealt with.
