Accolades Revolve Around ‘Revolver Rani’

Bollywood’s latest “Revolver Rani,” or Revolver Queen looks like it was inspired by Quentin Tarantino’s 2003 hit “Kill Bill.”

The movie stars Kangana Ranaut in the lead role as Alka, a trigger-happy politician who is inducted to the world of crime her uncle Bali (actor Piyush Mishra). One revenge begets another when Alka kills to avenge her father’s death.

Here is what critics had to say about the film:

In a review on NDTV, movie critic Saibal Chatterjee said ‘Revolver Rani’ was “uproariously funny and deeply disturbing.”

Mr. Chatterjee was impressed with Ms. Ranaut’s performance: “Kangana lends a crackling and corrosively sharp edge to the central character of a tough-as-nails woman in a mug’s game.”

He gave the movie three-and-half-hour stars out of five.

Writing for the Rediff website Paloma Sharma said she was disappointed with the movie. “Revolver Rani could have been the film of the year. It is sad that it chose to be a confused story instead,” she said.

The narrative was incoherent as it progressed. The focus of the movie shifted from Ms. Ranaut’s Alka to other characters in the movie. “The story disappears and so does the editor, or so it seems,” Ms. Sharma said.

Ms. Sharma  gave the movie two-and-a-half stars out of five.

Tanushree Bhasin of Firstpost appreciated the film but said it had its share of problems.

When the script takes a turn from gangs and guns to babies in the second half, the movie “smacks of sexism,” for judging the character’s “sexual independence,” Ms. Bhasin said.

The film was a “half-hearted attempt to make a hero out of a heroine,” Ms. Bhasin concluded.

Shubha Shetty-Sahaj of Mid-Day said the film started with a promise of quirkiness and black humor that “fits well with the subject in hand.”

Ms. Shetty-Sahaj had words of praise for the director, Sai Kaibeer and the depiction of day-to-day life in the Chambal valley.

She also noted Ms. Ranaut’s performance. “The capable actress portrays this offbeat role of a violent, passionate but vulnerable dacoit with commendable ease,” she writes.

She gave the movie three stars out of five.

Kangna has a great body which does not look vulgar

Kangna has a great body which does not look vulgar

Kangana Ranaut has worked hard on her look for Once Upon A Time In Mumbai. Dekho!

Sensually dramatic
The actress, who is known to reinvent herself for her roles, combines sensuality with drama for her styling for this set-in-seventies flick directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Ekta Kapoor.

"There is a lot of her in the character, " says Luthria. "She lends herself because she has a great body which does not look vulgar and her face is chameleon-like -- she can change into different looks everyday!"

Kangana plays a Bollywood diva called Rehana who is bohemian in character. Sparks fly when she meets a gangster Sultan (Ajay Devgn). Their relationship is a turning point in the film's plot.

"As it was the time of flower power and when women were getting liberated and live-in relationships came out in the open, her styling reflects all these aspects, " adds Luthria.

Her costumes have been designed by Manoshi Nath and Rushi Sharma.

The actress also did a lot of homework for the role. "We not only looked at actresses of the '70s here but also the trends that were prevailing in the West at that time.

But Kangana arrived at the office with a spiral bound book of her research for the movie. She had prepared a detailed account of the style, hairdos and accessories scene-by-scene which was also incorporated for her look."

Once Upon A Time releases on July 30.

Kangna Ranaut reinvents herself yet again!

This girl is a true chameleon; getting into the skin of the character so effortlessly that she leaves everyone dumbfounded with her transformation.
Now the beautiful, enigmatic and a powerhouse performer actress will soon be seen in Balaji and Milan Luthria's Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai.
As the film is set in the 70's era of romance, smuggling, cabaret and the mafia, it requires a woman with a liberated air; fearless and bold.
And if anyone could carry the part of Ajay Devgn's love interest, Rehana in the film, it's the bold and bohemian Bollywood diva.

Bollywood Goes Experimental With Unusual Jodis

Ajay Devgan & Konkona Sen
By india-server.com

Bollywood is now going experimental and trying unusual lead pairs like Akshay Kumar-Chitrangada Singh, Irrfan Khan-Priyanka Chopra, Abhay Deol-Sonam Kapoor and also Ajay Devgan-Kangana Ranaut. Much of this can be attributed to the offbeat scripts and the new age themes.

The audiences will now get to see Chitrangada of “Hazaaron Khwaishen Aisi” fame with Bollywood’s Khiladi Akshay Kumar in Rohit Dhawan's “Desi Boys”. Also our very own Priyanka Chopra or Piggy Chops has been paired opposite Irrfan Khan in Vishal Bharadwaj's “Saat Khoon Maaf”. Apart from these two jodis, Abhay Doel, best known for his offbeat cinema will share screen space with the very commercial Sonam Kapoor in “Aisha”. Ajay Devgan too, is part of the experimental bandwagon and will work opposite Kangana Ranaut in Ekta Kapoor's forthcoming “Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai” which is a movie based on underworld.

Film critic Omar Qureshi, feels that the shifting trend id due to the fact that it is difficult to get two big stars to work together due to their busy schedules. He says, “There are a handful of big stars and many a time directors run out of stars because of their busy schedules. These days scripts give directors the freedom to experiment and give a fresh look to the story.”

He added, “Now people are looking for performances in films. Star value is not the only unique selling proposition of the movie, unlike earlier when we mostly saw fixed pairings of Dharmendra with Hema Malini and Amitabh Bachchan with Jaya Bachchan.”

Film critic Anupama Chopra spoke about Karan Johar’s “Wake Up Sid” that was being viewed as a big risk before its release. After the movie released, however, it appealed to the audiences and eve to the critics. She says, “Konkona was the perfect match for that role. The role demanded someone who did not look like a typical teen but someone who is mature, unlike the slacker played by Ranbir.”

She adds, “There is a dearth of good and saleable stars in the Hindi film industry, which produces more than 200 films in a year. When it comes to casting, the choice usually boils down to four Khans, Hrithik and Abhishek and the topmost four heroines.”

The unusual pairing has worked for Konkana even before in “Omkara” with Saif Ali Khan and in “Atithi Tum Kab Jaoge” with Ajay Devgan.

It has however, not always worked. Irrfan Khan’s pairing up with Lara Dutta in “Billu” and with Juhi Chawla in “Krazzy 4” did not work while his “Namesake” opposite Tabu was appreciated.
