Welcome Charlie: Shah Rukh Khan is Mr Mary Kom in Latest Happy New Year Teaser

Shah Rukh Khan

HERE'S MORE OF THE BARE-CHESTED KING KHAN, PLAYING STREETFIGHTER CHARLIE, IN THE LATEST DROOLWORTHY TEASER FROM THE FILM.

For those who couldn't get enough of Shah Rukh Khan's chiseled body in the first look of Happy New Year, here's more of bare-chested King Khan - on a platter - playing streetfighter Charlie in the latest droolworthy teaser from the film.

In the video, Charlie makes mincemeat of his enemy in the fighter's ring and manages to look (and fight) like a Greek God through the entire nerve-racking, action packed sequences - amid dust, grime and drenching downpour. He reminds us of Priyanka Chopra's boxing sequences in Mary Kom.

Charlie believes in seizing opportunities and becoming a winner from a loser. "Duniya mein do tarah ke log hote hain - winners and losers, lekin zindagi har loser ko ek mauka zaroor deti hai jisme woh winner ban sakta hai," he reminds us at the end of it all.

Mary Kom review: Four reasons to watch Priyanka's 'Hum Boxing Kar Chuke Sanam'

Now let's get this straight. You might be a connoisseur of everything - from graphic novels and poha to kabaddi and Ukraine's politics on Facebook - we know your secret. You probably care as much about boxing, as about the amount of filth in the Yamuna and the partying deadline for the neighbour's son. So when Priyanka Chopra announced that she would be playing Mary Kom in a biographical film on the boxing champion, you must have already started making up the #MaarMaryMaar hashtags to grace Twitter and Facebook when you check in to a multiplex to watch the film.

The uncanny thing here is, director Omung Kumar (and 'creative director' Sanjay Leela Bhansali) knew exactly what you were thinking and guess what, they have given you a film with lines that could give Deepak Chopra and all the dialogues of Border and Veer Zara put together, a run for their money.
Here are our four (from roughly a few thousand) reasons why you should watch Mary Kom. And they have got nothing to do with wanting to know the boxer. Or having any interest in boxing.

1. Meet Mary Kom, the boxer trapped in a Karan Johar world
Mary Kom, the film, is basically Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham without its lehengas. But before you go into shock over the disappearance of disco ball wedding clothes, consider this:  there's Priyanka Chopra in racer back tees that come in hot pink, red, electric blue, purple and a bunch of other colours legitimized by Gossip Girls. So if you can make this little compromise, Mary Kom has every emotion that Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gham's cast had engaged in.
Sample this: Mary Kom's father, on finding out that despite his protests she has taken to boxing, asks her to choose between boxing and him. Our Mary, in the great Shah Rukh Khan tradition of synchronised nose-lip quivering, gets all upset and says she chooses boxing. Now, if you are not reminded of the very mature exchanges between Shah Rukh and Amitabh Bachchan in K3G, your memory should be praised for great immunity.

Then when the filmi Kom has babies, she stays up singing a five-minute long lullaby, obviously complete with an elaborate arranged background score. It's just sad that the aarti ki thaali  couldn't be cast in this one. It would have been perfect otherwise.
Actually, in Omung Kumar's film, Priyanka Chopra's relationship with boxing, in spirit and character, is wonderfully reminiscent of the one Jaya Bachchan shared with Khan in Karan Johar's post-colonial Indian epic. In fact, Khan's replacement in Mary Kom, the pair of boxing gloves, does a fine job of displaying more legitimate human emotions than anyone did in Johar's film.
So you're actually set to watch a minimal, revised-for-multiplexes edition of K3G. And the heroine's a boxer. That's modern, feminist and supremely cool at the same time. They also have a sappy wedding song you can tag your boyfriend on Facebook with! How cool is that?
Only, the film doesn't tell you Mary Kom's stunning story. However, it does a great job of making a Bollywood fairytale out of it - complete with songs and dream sequences.

2. You don't care about boxing? The film doesn't either!
Assuming like three-fourth's of India's film-watching audience, you haven't really read up on Mary Kom and boxing, what does Omung Kumar's film tell us about both? Nothing.
No one can blame you if find young Mary's obsession with boxing as inexplicable as Ram Gopal Verma's infatuation with ghosts. Chopra's character says she loves boxing and you are expected to believe her. There's nothing in Mary Kom's screenplay that either explains or unravels how Kom came to love boxing so much. Yes, they show a young Mary picking up a boxing glove from what looks like the debris of a blast site, but unless the child is generally fascinated by oddly shaped things, the film says nothing about Mary's introduction to boxing.
Yes, it says Mary was a violent, temperamental youngster, somehow making it seem like the only reason she takes to boxing. By that logic, the hundred odd contestants from a dozen seasons of Roadies, half of Bangalore's auto-drivers and peak hour commuters in Mumbai locals, should have all made for stellar boxers by now.
Reports suggest that in Manipur, sports is a means for residents of villages to fight poverty. The complicated and visceral relationship that the state has with a sport like boxing is instead replaced with three songs in the first 40 minutes.
In fact, it's almost shameful how the film makes a caricature out of the sport. Priyanka's Kom is seen having visions of boxing matches while she is in labour and has been anaesthetized. Unless that was supposed to be a deep visual metaphor for labour pain, we don't see why a sport she loves will be something anyone would be hallucinating about while going into labour. There's a slight difference between delivering a baby and smoking weed, right? Clearly in director Kumar's world, they are equally exhilarating.

3. You know nothing about northeast India? It's okay man!
If you are the kind who cannot tell between the little states scrunched into the northeast extreme of India's political map, worry not, you'll survive. Because what Mary Kom tells you about Manipur is exactly what KBC's trailers have told you about Nagaland. Or what your best friend has been telling you about the girls' hair, skin and their secret, underground market for chic hot-pants for the last decade now.
At one point of the film, Chopra accuses the boxing federation for discriminating against her as she is from the 'northeast'. Even the language of outrage is so familiar  - that is non-northeast - that you would imagine you are not watching an expensive Bollywood project on a sports hero from the northeast. You are watching a film on what you think the northeast is, one that could have been written in a Delhi coffee-shop with a working title Manipur ki beti Mary Kom or something that was being made for daily Indian soap.
There are winding mountain roads, pretty sunrises, women dancing in circles and people speaking in a Nepali accent- that's Manipur for you in Omung Kumar's Mary Kom.

4. Is 'Mere paas maa hai' the best thing you have heard in your life? Then Mary Kom's your film!
Coach" "Mary, tu khali pet boxing kar payegi naa?"
Mary: "Sir, pet to khushi she hi bhar gaya hai."
'Mere paas maa hai' should ideally feel a little scared right now. This is the closest any dialogue has come to threatening its pedestal. And Mary Kom is teeming with them.
For example this:
Mary: "Sir Chungneijang ko janam Appa, Ima ne diya. Use Mary Kom ko aapne banaya." "Mary aapke bagair boxing toh kar sakti hai, par jeet nahin sakti."
We are guessing the coach is a connoisseur of the K-serial school of dialogues. Else, he would have died of brain damage.
P.S: With Sanjay Leela Bhansali as the creative director of the film purists should grumble less and thank their stars that he didn't send Mary Kom tap dancing inside a boxing ring. Though that would have completed the film's Hum Boxing Kar Chuke Sanam-ness convincingly.

Sex symbols of Bollywood

‘Irresistibly sexy’ was not a phrase which the media used freely earlier. If Dev Anand were to act today – provided he added a few packs and walked bare-chested – he would have been definitely called that and not a ‘charming man who swept women off their feet.’ But, modern times are liberal times. Movies do not hide sex scenes by showing roses and friendly pigeons onscreen. Television doesn’t hesitate to talk about sex appeal frankly. Indian online media is as frank as the others: quite naturally, if one wishes to cater to the changed mindset of today’s times. Presenting a list of sex symbols, out of which the tenth choice depends on you, dear reader.

Sunny Leone The tag of a former porn star notwithstanding and in spite of not having more than one hit on her Bollywood’s curriculum vitae, Sunny is a huge sex symbol in town. Ask fifty percent of the nation’s population: in other words, men. A high percentage will cast their votes in her favour.

John Abraham There was a time when this guy couldn’t act to save his life. Now, he acts pretty well as was seen in Madras Cafe. But that one candid moment in Dostana is something nobody has been able to forget: because of dislike, envy, awe, whatever. John, yes even now, is a happening sex symbol, although Bipasha Basu may be inclined to disagree.

Priyanka Chopra Some people just hate her. Many cannot stand her singing. But ask the others who are her fans, and you will come across numerous people who just cannot look beyond her. What helps her case is that she is a fine actress too, which showed in her films like 7 Khoon Maaf, Kaminey and Fashion among others.

Ranbir Kapoor If you take a look at him, ‘cute’ sounds like a better and more appropriate word. But, then he takes off his shirt, and many among his fans go ‘ahhhh.’ This chap acts really well, as seen in Rockstar and Barfi among other films. But the single most popular moment of his entire career is from his disastrous debut: Saawariya. Remember him draped in a towel? You should.

Katrina Kaif Katrina is very interesting. She looks extremely attractive on most occasions. But give her an item number (Tees Maar Khan) or another show-stopping song (Dhoom:3), and she transforms herself into a diva who is uninhibited, hot and stunning. Among the chart-toppers any day.

Are Katrina Kaif, Ranbir Kapoor Ready to Admit to Dating?

Ranbir Kapoor Katrina Kaif

New age actors Ranbir Kapoor and Katrina Kaif may just be taking their relationship to the next level - as in, they may finally be ready to go public. The usually secretive couple dispensed with their habitual caution and showed up together at director Karan Johar's residence on August 29 in Mumbai.

In the past, Katrina and Ranbir have taken great pains not to be photographed together, arriving at and leaving from parties and events in separate cars. Until recently.

Katrina also seems to be on the receiving end of attention from celebrities other than her famous beau. Namely, Sonam Kapoor who candidly stated that she has a girl crush on Katrina. During a Twitter interview with a senior film journalist, Sonam admitted to being fond of Katrina.

Sonam said "Hahahaha... I am an open book but I do have a girl crush on Katrina Kaif."

This is a direct about turn for Sonam who earlier called Katrina "shameless". She later clarified that she had called Katrina 'shameless' in a positive sort of way, but that didn't stop the media from creating a storm. The girl crush will clearly go a long way in sweeping up the mess those words may have created.

And Sonam is not the only one to go gaga about Katrina. Actress Priyanka Chopra praised Katrina for her acting skills recently, saying "I have been part of a few 100 crore films. But you cannot give me the credit for a Krrish or a Don. I am a 'supporting actor' in these films. But you cannot not give me credit in a Barfi!. You cannot not give credit to Katrina Kaif in Rajneeti. No one can play the role, the way she did it."

Katrina, who was offered Barfi!, reportedly turned it down because she refused to play second fiddle to Priyanka. But with this recent formation of an admiration society for Katrina Kaif, Bollywood equations may be changing.

Why Priyanka Chopra's Friendship With Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the Talk of Bollywood

Why Priyanka Chopra's Friendship With Sanjay Leela Bhansali is the Talk of Bollywood

Sanjay Leela Bhansali has produced Mary Kom which stars Priyanka Priyanka Chopra, who plays the lead in Sanjay Leela Bhansali's co-production Mary Kom, seems to be the filmmaker's latest muse.

It was Aishwarya Rai who at one time inspired Sanjay Leela Bhansali to make a trilogy of great films - Devdas, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Guzaarish. For a while it was Rani Mukerji who seemed to occupy Bhansali's muse-space. Then it seemed Deepika Padukone had taken over when he signed her for Ram-Leela and Bajirao Mastani.

Priyanka also especially flew to Mumbai to attend the first-look event of Mary Kom and to attend a special birthday party hosted by the filmmaker for her recently.

A source close to Mr Bhansali said, "Never in his life would Sanjay have dreamt of hosting a party for anyone in his house. In fact, he has never had a party in his house. But he did it for Priyanka last week on the occasion of her birthday. He not only hosted a birthday party for Priyanka he also personally invited all his friends, and hers."

Their friendship is the talk of tinsel town. Their association started when he offered her the item song in Ram-Leela, and the dance number became a success.

Followed Mary Kom. Though Bhansali has only produced the film, he is said to have sat on the final editing and took Priyanka's role to another level.

Mary Kom has been designed to turn PC into a hero of the masses. Priyanka was so impressed by Bhansali that she blindly and unquestioningly said 'yes' to a role in Bajirao Mastani although she didn't have the title role," the source added.

I didn't choose to be a girl, it's unfair I am supposed to be scared: Parineeti Chopra

At a press meet last year, Parineeti Chopra yelled at a journalist for his ‘sexist’ comment.

Interestingly, the video clip only went viral on the Internet recently. We ask Parineeti about the incident, and the state of women’s security in India.

Do you know about the video from a press conference that went viral?

Some people messaged me saying, ‘Way to go’, and that’s when I got to know that it’s out again. Even I felt ‘Yeh kahaan se aa gaya? Itna late reaction kyun hua ispe?’ (Where did this come from? Why is there such a late reaction to it?).

You look very angry in the clip…
The man said the most absurd, sexist thing. I would have hit him. Most people told me that they are proud of me, so I know I am right (smiles).

Of late, a number of rape cases have been reported, especially from Uttar Pradesh...
It’s not about ‘where’ the rape is happening. Due to the Delhi gang-rape and others, these cases have started getting media attention. People talk about them more, and more action is being taken. As a girl, it surely affects me, regardless of the location.

Despite all the security, do you feel vulnerable?
Yes. I run my own errands — like buying groceries — without security. If we finish shooting at 8-9 pm, or even later, we have to schedule other meetings after that. So, I’m out till 1-2 am, and when I’m returning home, I don’t know what can happen.

Do these instances frustrate you?
If I were a boy, I wouldn’t be scared. I feel it’s unfair. I haven’t chosen my gender. I happen to be a girl by birth. That shouldn’t mean I am supposed to feel scared all the time. I am sure no boy would feel scared walking on the roads at two o’clock in the night. But, as a girl, I can’t do that. I don’t understand this kind of discrimination.

When you stated that you weren’t close to your cousin, Meera, she dubbed the comment ‘stupid’.
That’s the truth. I swear I don’t know our exact relationship. As far as I know, our dads are either first or second cousins. Anyway, I am not in touch with her. I don’t speak to Meera at all. I don’t know why she has said that it’sstupid because that’s a fact.

But Meera is close to your cousin Priyanka Chopra.
I think she is in touch with Mimi didi (Priyanka). They must be close but that’s not the case with me. And that happens. Among cousins, you are close to some, while not to others. She is not my direct cousin, so I am not close to her.

You have two films coming up, including one with your first co-star, Ranveer Singh. How does that feel?
In Daawat-e-Ishq , my film with Aditya (Roy Kapur), you will see a lot of food. And I am excited about working with Govinda and Ranveer. Both of them know Shaad (Ali, director) from before, but for me he was just Shaad the director. I got to know while working on the film that he is the maddest person. Since all four of us have a lot of energy, there was a group of four mad people on the sets.

Priyanka Chopra's Reddit AMA: The train wreck that was

On Thursday, Bollywood actress Priyanka Chopra created an account on Reddit and became one of the rare Bollywood celebrities to venture into the labyrinth of Reddit and conduct an Ask Me Anything (AMA). As the name suggests, Reddit's AMA allows its users to ask the person conducting the AMA anything they want.

The AMA started off smoothly enough. Chopra introduced herself and invited users to ask her anything they pleased. "Hello Reddit… it’s Priyanka. I’m currently crisscrossing the world shooting for a film in Europe, attending a family wedding in the US, taking care of business in India! But I’m taking time off from all of that to have a conversation with all of you."

Questions poured in from users on Reddit. Chopra was genial as she answered questions on films, her work on the upcoming film on Mary Kom, her journey from acting to singing, her love of nutella cake and her favourite holiday destination. Chopra didn't seem to shy away from controversial questions.

On legalization of homosexuality she opined, "I believe that people should be free to live the way they want to. Love is love and is not defined by whether you are homosexual or heterosexual! Very simply, I believe in the adage 'to each his / her own'. I firmly believe that everyone is entitled to their own sexual preferences."

On the racist backlash after NFL Thrusday, she said, "Hey the world has its fair share of haters and you can't let them decide your fate. I love making music and making movies."

But soon the questions turned confrontational as users attacked her accent, use of autotune in her music videos and asked her about the road in Mumbai that was named after her dad and why she endorsed cosmetic creams.

As these questions went unanswered, the redditors started answering each other with comments that she had fled and that a media/PR team was handling the AMA.

The conversation took a turn for the worse when Chopra seemed to have disappeared. Reddit can be a haven for the nasty and bizarre. Questions started to range from whether she liked batatavadas and gujarati donkeys to how much she spent on plastic surgery and how often she bleaches her body. A user commented that Chopra's cherished moment with dad was watching Old Boy together, a film known for its incest angle.

Celebrity AMAs go viral and, when they go well, win over several fans. But Chopra seems to have drawn the short end of the stick.

Deepika ready to turn assistant director for Zoya Akhtar's next

The reigning queen of Bollywood Deepika Padukone is planning to take on a new role now. We are not talking about an upcoming acting project, but that of an assistant director. Deepika has expressed her wish to come on board for Zoya Akhtar's next as an assistant director.

Deepika is intending to take upon the role of an assistant director quite late in her career, as most actors try their hands on the same before they begin their journey as an actor.

However, Deepika is apparently so impressed with the script of Zoya Akhtar's 'Dil Dhadakne Do' that she says she wants to be a part of it in any capacity, even in a non-acting role.
Deepika was quoted saying, "I love the script so much that I am ready to work in any capacity on the film, including an assistant director (AD). But I don't know if I can manage that (working as an AD)."

When asked if Deepika has expressed her desire to Zoya, she said, "Not really...I've met her, but not talked about it (getting associated with the film)."
Deepika's alleged boyfriend Ranveer Singh plays the main lead in the film.

Zoya's directorial venture will also have Priyanka Chopra, Anushka Sharma and Farhan Akhtar. There is buzz that Ranveer and Priyanka will play siblings, with Anushka and Farhan opposite them.

Ranbir at 'Gunday' screening without Katrina

Ranbir Kapoor and rumoured girlfriend Karina Kaif have let gossip mongers run wild once again. After the duo made headlines with their alleged romance and then the news of their apparent tiff, the rumoured love-birds have started maintaining a distance while making public appearances.

The buzz around this rumour is stronger than ever before. According to a report in the Indian Express, Ranbir recently attended the screening of the film ' Gunday' sans his alleged ladylove Katrina. Ranbir attended the screening with best friend and director Ayanj Mukerji. While Ayan and Ranbir are usually spotted together at various filmi parties as well, Katrina's abscense at the screening has raised eyebrows.

READ: Ranbir-Katrina hotter than Ranveer-Deepika?

A few days earlier, Ranbir, Ayan and Arjun Kapoor attended filmmaker Karan Johar's private party and alleged girlfriend Katrina was missing even then. In fact, what adds fuel to fire is that both Katrina and Ranbir a few days ago had gone for dinner to Kiran Rao's house where the two came and left separately.
