RGV launches Rann trailer on Big B's birthday

Mumbai: Filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma decided to celebrate superstar Amitabh Bachchan’s birthday in style. As a gift to the Big B, Varma launched the theatrical trailer of their upcoming film Rann.

He also surprised Bachchan with a huge cake and 21 look-alikes dressed as characters from famous Bachchan films. Needless to say, the actor was touched and reminisced about his childhood.

“In our childhood we were always so excited as to when our birthday would come. There would always be a grand meal and people would come over and there would be presents. Most of the time we would go to the guests and ask them what gifts they've got for us,” Bachchan said.

The actor, who completes 40 years in the film industry, plays the head of a television news channel in Rann. And the Big B claims he now understands what “poor press people go through”.

“Be it weddings or Karvachawth, the media is always there, in the neighbour’s buildings trying to get shots. But again it is your democratic right to do what you want, it's a free country,” Bachchan said.

Meanwhile, RGV cried himself hoarse denying that Bachchan's character was based on any top journalist.

“The leading journalists may have been an inspiration but it is not about their life or their relationships. The idea has been taken from them,” Varma said.

Rann, which has already attracted enough controversy, also stars Ritiesh Deshmukh and is all set for a January 2010 release.
