Irrfan Khan to play Nehru opposite Cate Blanchett as Edwina

Mumbai: Irrfan Khan is confirmed to be playing Jawaharlal Nehru to Cate Blanchett's Edwina Mountbatten in the controversial Joe Wright film Indian Summer. Hugh Grant may be playing the role of Lord Mountbatten, India's last viceroy and Edwina's husband.
The government has cleared the script of the film, based on Alex von Tunzelmann's book 'Indian Summer: The Secret History of the End of an Empire', on the condition that it be shown to a government representative upon completion.
Shooting of the film, being produced by Universal Pictures, is expected to start early next year in India. Confirming that he has been approached for the role of Nehru, Irrfan said: "I cannot divulge details as not everything has been finalised."
The Nehru-Edwina relationship has been an evergreen topic for the media and memoirists alike. As late as 2007, the Mountbattens' daughter Pamela wrote about it in 'India Remembered'.
About whether Independent India's first prime minister and Edwina were in love, Nehru's niece, the writer Nayantara Sahgal, said: "Anybody who claims they had a sexual relationship would be conjecturing. What they had was a lasting relationship of love and friendship."
