She had to sit on a high chair and her short dress was making her very cautious. She posed for the shutterbugs from side so that they cannot capture her front pose which could give her an oops moment. So all you see is the side poses for the cameras. See the pictures.

Daawat-e-Ishq review: Parineeti Chopra, Aditya Roy Kapur's film is so not delicious

A still from Daawat-e-Ishq. Image courtesy: Facebook page of film.
First things first. Daawat-e-Ishq is not a new film.

You have watched it many, many times. At one time, it was called Ladies vs Ricky Bahl. At another, Bluffmaster. Actually, take a Karan Johar college romance and replace its waxed, designer hero with rusty con man, or con woman. Scrape away its gay jokes and fat boy humour with a fistful of earthy word play. What you get is Daawat-e-Ishq and that's probably the biggest misfortune for a film written and directed by Habib Faisal.

Despite being written and directed by Faisal, who wrote that warm cupcake of a film Do Dooni Char, Daawat-e-Ishq tries to root itself in a similar, realistic universe of realism, but with a few Bollywood accents. As a result, if you've managed to sit through till the interval, you know exactly what's going to happen in the end.

However, that's the boring part and when it begins, Daawat-e-Ishq is not a drag. Gulrez Qadir (Parineeti Chopra) is a feisty, smart college-going girl in Hyderabad. Her father, played by Anupam Kher, is a senior clerk in the high court. Gulrez topped her batch in class XII exams, does a part time job in a shoe shop and is also studying in college. Her father, however, wants her to get married as soon as possible and lines up several prospective grooms for her. Not only are these men caricaturish, silly and undeserving, they also demand steep dowry for marrying Gulrez, aka Gullu.

Fed up of these obviously evil people, Gullu hatches a plan to con a rich guy who demands a hefty dowry. She'll have a fake nikah with him, then frame him in a dowry harassment case, wrench a lot of money out of the guy's family in an out-of-court settlement and finally escape to New York to study fashion designing. She manages to rope her father in to help her achieve her target. They decide to target the hapless gents of Lucknow who have signed up to matrimonial websites.

And then Gullu meets Tariq aka Taru (Aditya Roy Kapur). His family owns the oldest kebab place in Lucknow, which is the daawat part of the title. Gullu, then in the disguise of Sania from Dubai, chooses Tariq as the target of her con because he's the richest of all the prospective grooms she's encountered. Unless you have been living under a rock all these years as Bollywood laughed its way to banks, you know what happens next. Or at least how it all ends. Here's a hint: With a song, of course!

It's never been very difficult to sit through a film that has Parineeti Chopra in it. There is something intensely endearing about her. That's perhaps because she makes the ordinary seem engaging, the odd seem cute and doesn't let her audience's attention stray from her when she is onscreen. With Anupam Kher playing her father, the duo makes the first few episodes of Daawat-e-Ishq an easy watch.

There are obvious lapses in logic. Why is a middle class, educated, financially comfortable father so desperate to marry off a smart girl like Gulrez as if that's the only good thing she can do with her life? She hasn't even finished her undergraduate degree. Why does Gulrez never protest her father's preoccupation with getting her married? Her morally upright father's quick u-turn and agreement to take part in a con is entirely unconvincing. However, despite inconsistencies, the playful banter between Gulrez and her father hold the film together through the first 45 minutes well.

And then, like all good things, that first half comes to an end. What is more unfortunate is that the end comes hand in hand with the most good-looking thing in the film - Aditya Roy Kapur. It's a crime to take someone like Kapur, strip him of his greatest talent - ie his gorgeousness - and clothe him instead in uncouthness. Faisal puts Kapur in shirts that best work as cushion covers, blunts his beautiful jawline with stubble, paints his eyes over with surma and asks you to believe that a girl will fall in love with him. Especially when his dialogue delivery sounds a bit like he is in the middle of a Dev Anand caricature at a high school play. It doesn't help that Kapur as Taru has the personality of a school head boy trying to make sure everything runs smoothly at the annual fest. Actually, there's more chemistry between a plate of biryani and Anupam Kher than there is in a romantic scene between Gullu and Taru. So when we are told that they are in love, it's as difficult for us to digest it as it was to watch Katrina Kaif playing a politician for half a minute in Rajneeti.

There's also the minor detail that the film's message on Section 498A is deeply confusing. Is Faisal really saying that it's okay for women to use it to victimise innocent families? Or is he suggesting that dowry cases are false?

Also, in case you had thought food is integral to the story, be warned, this is not a big-budget The Lunchbox. In fact, food in Daawat-e-Ishq is only as important as anyone else is in a Salman Khan film.

But much worse than Faisal's take on Section 498A is Daawat-e-Ishq's ending, which has everything from ghastly action choreography -- clearly the one thing that Parineeti Chopra cannot do is do fight scenes -- to corny dialogues. Friends and fans of Faisal, just pretend the last 15 minutes of Daawat-e-Ishq never happened. To give you a fair sense, it's worse than the last 15 minutes in Ishaqzaade.

Shweta Basu sex scandal: Deepika Padukone extends support

Shweta Basu sex scandal: Deepika Padukone extends support

While most people in the industry chose to keep mum on the prostitution scandal involving actress Shweta Basu Prasad, Bollywood beauty Deepika Padukone came out in support of the National Award Winner.

According to a report when questioned about the issue, the 'Finding Fanny' actress said that if this was the only thing she could do to support herself and her family then there is nothing wrong in it. Demanding justice for the National Award winning actress, Deepika said that rather than making it a scandal we should understand her problem and extend a helping hand.

So far, the 'Makdee' actress has found support from her onscreen mother Sakshi Tanwar, filmmakers Nagesh Kukunoor, Karan Johar and Vishal Bharadwaj and film producer Hansal Mehta.

Last week, 23-year-old actress Shweta Basu Prasad was arrested by the Hyderabad Police in connection with a high profile prostitution racket.

Some applause is due for Deepika Padukone for speaking strongly about such an important issue as the young and talented actress had to resort to prostitution due to lack of money.

Finding fanny: Lost and found

LOVE STORIES A scene from

How far will you go to find love? After a Bollywood “Cocktail”, Director Homi Adajania drinks neat and manages to capture the quirks of love and longing with lust playing hide and seek. On the surface it appears as nothing more than absurd humour highlighting the eccentricities of five Goans caught in a time warp. But as the wrap unravels, Homi delivers the bitter uncertainties of life in the form of a sweet pill without letting us know what he is up to. Like a seasoned magician he takes the carpet off our feet when you least expect it.

It is a kind of film which keeps a smile on your face but at the same time makes you feel guilty about how pride can ruin budding relationships. It shows us the shapes unrequited love can take. It is this twitchy feeing that makes this screwball comedy special. Not many films manage to make the heart twinge these days, when, like many things, emotions are also manufactured.

Set in Pocolim, a fictional Goan village where change is not the only constant in life, an aging postman Ferdie cries one night when he finds a letter that he posted more than four decades has returned to him. It is a letter where Ferdie had spelt out his emotions for Stephanie Fernandes (Anjali Patil). A young angelic widow Angie (Deepika Padukone) helps him to find Stephanie or Fanny by putting together a journey where they are joined in by Angie’s frenzied widowed mother in law Rosie (Dimple Kapadia). They need a car and a driver. So they lure Don Podro (Pankaj Kapur), a painter in love with Rosie’s voluptuous body and the brooding Savio (Arjun Kapoor), who was in love with Angie but was too proud to express it.

Rosie comes with her cat Nareus, who soon becomes a metaphor for what these travellers are hiding. As the masks come off, mirth and melancholy become intimate bedfellows, best captured in the scene where Angie gives Savio a polite dressing down after making love. Or the one where Don Podro discovers that his passion for Rosie is only skin deep.

One has learnt that the screenplay is drawn from a yet to be published novel by Homi’s long time collaborator Kersi Khambatta. Though it doesn’t guarantee but when you draw from a well soaked material, chances are that the characters don’t crumble easily. Also the dialogues don’t slip into contrivances. The film is made in English and there is not a single moment where you feel that these people are putting up a façade. There is a Hindi dub version playing in theatres as well. This critic watched both and found that not much has lost in translation. It is partly because Homi has retained crucial words and sentences in English and largely because he hasn’t relied only on words to express the quirks of the characters. A lot has been captured through expressions and he has got the cast to deliver the goods. Take the opening scene where Ferdie discovers that the letter never reached Fanny. Before Homi spill the details, Naseer conveys the pain of the unrequited love through his mien. Seasoned cinematographer Anil Mehta turns the languid pace of the place into a work of art and French composer Mathias Duplessy tunes and arrangements generate the Portuguese flavour even when the lines go the “Mahi vey”.

With “Cocktail”, Homi established that Deepika has more to her than just a pretty face. Angie is the opposite of Veronica but as we found an Angie in Veronica, here we discover a streak of Veronica in Angie. Playing an irresistible dame who will say sorry before slaying, Deepika takes off the fineries of Bollywood and you can sense the freedom from baggage in her performance. Arjun shows restraint with his scowls and for once sounds genuine in his anguish. Kapur doesn’t allow the flamboyant Don Podro to go over the top but it is Dimple who lends scars to this otherwise pretty-faced film as the lady whose fragile ego and frantic disposition often lead to funny results. Things get untangled rather easily towards the end making one feel that Homi hasn’t paid heed to don Podro’s advice – ‘In art there is no compromise.’ Still there are many reasons to get lost!

We don't want to see Shweta Prasad Basu on Bigg Boss. Period.

It's a TV classic. A prime-time show, where celebs come, bitch, make 'friends', let out their 'secrets', have flirtatious relationships... all in front of the prying eyes of millions of viewers. Out of these, some get famous just like that; others fight for their 15 minutes of fame. Yes, what else, we're talking about Bigg Boss.

If you don't know already, it's that time of the year again! Pre-Bigg Boss time! The time when rumour mills set rolling and work overtime to come up with a list of likely housemates who'll be locked inside the famed house for the 'journey of their life'.

And now we have so many tongues wagging that former child actor Shweta Prasad Basu could be one of the contestants of the show, after she hit headlines for her involvement in a prostitution racket. Why? Because she promises drama, both in and out of the house! A relative newcomer to the fame game, it is immaterial whether she'd indulge the more experienced celebs in the house -- and the audience -- and tell her side of the story. But, going by Bigg Boss tradition, she will no doubt grab eyeballs, and that's a win-win situation for the channel's bigwigs in their battle for TRPs.
Here's what we feel: Shweta Prasad Basu should not be a contestant of Bigg Boss 8 because we don't want to see her go the Anita Advani or Rakhi Sawant way and parade herself in front of millions in order to get sympathy. The point is simple: Whatever her circumstances, needs, or the compulsion, before she decided to demean herself, this girl does not need our sympathies.

Honestly, who are we to judge? She did something she thought was the right thing to do and it should be none of our business. Anybody's business, for that matter. And if a few stubborn ones among us insist it is, here's a question: Would Shweta Prasad's presence in a group of bitchy, politicking, hungry-to-win contestants help identify the men who didn't have any moral qualms before they went to her? Sure, the world will not change even if we hear who they were, what they do or how 'connected' they are to people who matter. If nothing else, at least it could give us all a sense of closure. No?
Again, the world will also not change if we don’t find out who these men are.  Will any action be taken against them or the men who are involved in running the racket?  So, why do we need to see Prasad on our TV screens every night? What will she get by coming on the show?

Just because the entire world seems to be interested in knowing what-the-hell-went-wrong with what we thought would be a famous actor some day, doesn't mean she should get bullied by greedy television executives hungry to create drama and drive up ratings and sell her story.

Just because we suffer from extreme narcissism doesn't mean Shweta Prasad should validate herself by having everyone watch her all the time. We don't want to see her look like a broken soul, who needs a TV show to show people what she truly is, and what she isn't.

Reality TV is one funny place -- it puts immense pressure on contestants, who don't always know exactly what they have signed up for. Prasad might already be psychologically fragile, add to that the pressure of 'looking good', 'sounding right'.

No, Prasad doesn’t need to go through this whole attention-seeking journey of proving something to god knows whom, reacting to the 'games' of other housemates, trying to make them like her, and in the process trying to win our hearts. No, we don't want to see her pouting, posing, primping, preening on Bigg Boss. We want the whole sex racket episode to end and end now. Because, once she's on Bigg Boss, there's no ending this sex racket saga! sthash.

Young actress Shweta Basu Prasad, who was arrested last week in a prostitution racket case by the Hyderabad police, is most likely to reveal the identity of her clients.

As per reports,  her clients are said to be very high profile business tycoons from many big cities across the country.

It has also been learnt that these businessmen had coughed up one lakh each to a pimp so that they could spend the night with her.

The young actress, who is now 23-year-old was caught in a compromising position, when the police raided a plush hotel at Banjara Hills. The actress was held in company of a pimp, along with some high profile businessmen from Mumbai.

While the police had exposed Shweta's name in the prostitution racket, they did not come up with the names of her clients. But now, it seems Shweta is ready to bring in light the names of her clients who are supposedly big names and influential business tycoons.

According to reports, the 'Makdee' actress took to flesh trade due to financial losses and got into the prostitution racket voluntarily, as she had to support her family and other causes.

Shweta tasted success at a very tender age and went on to grab great roles in films such as 'Makdee', which even won her a National Award for Best Child Artist in the year 2002.

Incidentally, this is not the first time that her name has surfaced in connection with a prostitution racket. Shweta is also reported to have been exposed in a sting operation recently.

Why Aishwarya Rai rejected Varun Dhawan's 'Badlapur'?

Why Aishwarya Rai rejected Varun Dhawan's 'Badlapur'?

When world's most beautiful woman, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan decides to make a comeback into movies, the reaction is nothing short of a news.

Now, as we all are aware that `Jazbaa` will mark the comback of sorts for Ash on the silver screen, what we did not probably knew was the fact that `Badlapur` was on her mind way before `Jazbaa`.

According to reports, earlier Ash was in talks with Sriram Raghavan's film to make her comeback in Hindi movies. But she rejected the Varun Dhawan starrer `Badlapur` owing to the ensemble cast that the movie has- Huma Qureshi, Nawazuddin Siddiquia and Yami Gautam.

It seems that too many stars in one project is what the former Miss World didn't want in her comeback film. Another major reason for her to reject the movie, was the need for her to play a grey shade. Aishwarya was supposed to essay a negative character in the film.

Therefore, the lady decided to give it a miss and now Sanjay Gupta's `Jazbaa` is the one where she will be seen making a grand re-entry on the silver screens.
