Film: Hot Tub Time Machine
Director: Josh Heald
Cast: John Cusack, Rob Corddry, Craig Robinson, Clark Duke, Crispin Glover, Lizzy Caplan, Chevy Chase, Sebastian Stan, Lyndsy Fonseca, Collette Wolfe
A typical American grossed-out comedy, Hot Tub Time Machineuses the ‘back to the future’ concept to drive its dysfunctional comedic plot points home.
The film follows a group of best friends — Adam (Cusack) who has been dumped by his girlfriend; Lou (Corddry) who is a party guy but never can find the party; Nick(Robinson), whose wife controls his every move; and the young video game-obsessed Jacob (Duke), who won't leave his basement.
After a crazy night of drinking in a ski resort hot tub, the men wake up, heads pounding, in the year 1986. Is it a good thing or bad?
You wouldn’t care, for sure.
The story does not make any sense. There is no conviction to be had in the time machine concept and the projected adrift lifestyles of the four don’t really give you any hope for improvement.
The dysfunctions on display are so acute that it just makes it harder for the characters to earn even a modicum of sympathy for their respective plights.
The narrative is a non-stop barrage of tasteless, crude, visually obnoxious gags and atrociously stupid humour. It’s a case of gross overload where every scene is crammed to the crannies with distasteful verbal and visual riffs.
It's the kind of slapstick that will be simply unpalatable to those who seek refinement in their entertainment.
